David P. Mitzel
Profession:
Director, AHoOT (Appalachian Hills of Ohio Territory)
Five Words About Me:
Community member, Luddite, doer, Dewar’s
One Surprising Skill:
I game shopping. I recently saved $1200 on an $89 purchase at Kohl’s
An Ohio native, I graduated from Williams College and left for Spain where I ran with the bulls and perched over Barcelona from Gaudi’s Park Guell and his La Sagrada Familia. Crossing to Africa, I met Loren Jenkins (Newsweek and NPR) who pitched Columbia University for journalism. Stateside, I became a field editor for college textbooks at T.Y. Crowell and Praeger publishers abutting Columbia experience. After breaking up with a diplomat’s daughter, I drifted and ran into some drifts cab-driving and bartending. Regrouping, I served George Washington University before landing at Ohio University-Zanesville. Thirty-nine years later: a Ph.D; founding and directing a community foundation, the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics and the All Ohio; the Foot by Foot on the Winding Road event for 100 artists; and AHoOT. I perch in Pioneer School above downtown Zanesville.
